De Lichtfabriek
Photograph taken from the Burcht van Leiden (Fort of Leiden), looking out over the orange rooftops of Leiden’s city centre.
Rising above the rooftops of Leiden is the Energiecentrale Leiden (Leiden Power Station), a municipally listed heritage building. This power station opened in 1907 and, following modernisation, continues to operate as a power station.
It is an important combined heat and power plant that supplies both electricity and heat to the city. This plant plays a crucial role in the energy supply to many households in Leiden.
The power station is also popularly known as ‘De Lichtfabriek’ (The Light Factory).
